Oral Microbiology examines the microorganisms of the oral cavity and the ecological
and host factors that determine oral health, dysbiosis, and disease. The course
integrates microbial diversity, colonization and adhesion, dental-biofilm
development, salivary and immune defences, dental caries, periodontal and
endodontic infections, oral fungal and viral infections, and relationships between the
oral microbiome and systemic health. It also introduces antimicrobial stewardship,
sterilization, disinfection, biosafety, and emerging approaches such as
metagenomics. Lectures, discussions, clinical cases, and an evidence-appraisal
assignment connect foundational microbiological knowledge to disease prevention,
clinical reasoning, and safe dental practice.
