    Course Description:

    • Pulse modulation: Sampling process. Pulse Modulation (PAM, PWM, PDM). Quantization process, pulse code modulation, noise considerations in PCM systems. Time-division multiplexing, Digital multiplexers. Delta modulation. Differential pulse code modulation. Adaptive pulse code modulation.

    • Linear Predictive Coding (introduction).

    • Passband digital transmission: Passband transmission model. Coherent phase shift keying, M-ary phase-shift keying (QPSK and M-ary PSK). Hybrid amplitude/Phase modulation schemes (QAM). Coherent Frequency shift keying. Non-coherent orthogonal modulation. Non-coherent binary FSK. Differential phase-shift keying, M-ary FSK. Effect of noise on various modulation schemes and analysis for the computation of the average probability of error versus increased bandwidth transmission.

    • Baseband pulse transmission: Matched filter. Error rate due to noise. Intersymbol interference.

     

    Course Objectives:

    To introduce the basics of digital communication systems including the analysis and synthesis of such systems. To introduce the fundamental concepts of linear prediction coding and it’s applications. To get familiar with digital modulation techniques and their importance. To study the probability of error. To be able to design a practical digital communication system at the block diagram level under certain constraints and requirements.

     

    Intended Learning Outcomes and Competencies:

    At the end of this course students should be able to;

    1. Convert signal from analog to digital and vice versa using sampling theory.

    2. Analyze the effect of various noise types on the average probability of error

    3. Design a digital communication system to meet certain requirements

  Topic One: Pulse Modulation

  • Introduction:

    Modulation is use used in three basic forms 1) Analogue 2) Pulse and 3) Digital Modulation.  Here we introduce the Pulse modulation as a transient stage from analogue to digital modulation. It also presents sampling and quantization leading to PCM and line coding. Reconstruction of the original signal is considered with certain error values.

     

    Objectives:

    The main objectives of this topic are:

    1. Recognize the Sampling theorem

    2. Classify Pulse Modulation

    3. Apply Quantization

    4. Chose a proper Line coding format

    Analogue signal is sampled then it becomes discrete in time but not digital. Quantization is used to discretize the amplitudes of theses samples. Quantization introduces some error and so SNR at the output of the quantizer is considered.

  Other forms of Pulse Modulation and Time Division Multiplexing (TDM)

  • Introduction

    More methods for digital pulse modulation are discussed. Time Division Multiplexing is introduced as an important issue in modern Communication. It mainly enables many signals to be shared over the same channel by giving each signal a specific time duration. Moreover, several digital pulse modulation techniques are introduced.

     

    Objective:

    The main objectives of this topic will be
