    Chapter One:
    INTRODUCTION TO TRAFFIC ENGINEERING

    • Introduction:

      The chapter introduces traffic engineering, its relevance, objectives, and its relation with transportation engineering. The chapter also presents need for traffic engineering studies, traffic operations analysis, and design of traffic control systems. Information obtained through traffic engineering studies serves to identify relevant characteristics and define related problems. Traffic flow is of fundamental importance in developing and designing strategies for intersection control, urban and rural highways. The chapter also introduces transportation planning, and shows how it interacts with traffic engineering.

       

      Objectives:

      1. Identify the importance of traffic engineering, and the general relation with transportation engineering.
      2. Define traffic engineering and its various aspects. 
      3. Recognize the various areas of the traffic engineering profession and their interrelations with other related disciplines.
      4. Demonstrate the contemporary issues and challenges related to traffic engineering, including mobility (congestion), safety, environment, and economic aspects.

    Chapter Two:

    Traffic Engineering Studies

    • Introduction :

      This chapter introduces the different traffic engineering studies that are conducted to collect traffic data in order to assist the traffic engineer in assessing and solving traffic problems including road crashes, parking difficulties, congestion, and delay. Brief descriptions of the methods of collecting and analyzing the data are also included.

       

      Objectives:

      1. Identify the main traffic engineering studies that are needed to assess and solve traffic problems.
      2. Explain the relevance and the major characteristics for the main traffic engineering studies, including speed, volume, travel time and delay, as well as parking studies.
      3. Design the traffic engineering studies (experiments) and data collection techniques, identifying sample size, as well as the location, time and duration for conducting the studies.
      4. Illustrate how to analyze the collected data and demonstrate how to establish the basis for proposed traffic related actions, whether related to design, analysis or operation of roadway and traffic systems.

      1. Spot Speed Studies
      2. Volume Studies
      3. Travel Time and Delay Studies
      4. Parking Studies

      First: To explore the relevance and the major characteristics of spot speed studies, and be able to design such studies, considering the proper data collection techniques and key variables, and analyze the collected data and demonstrate how to establish the basis for proposed speed related actions, study the following multimedia and slides files.

    Chapter Three:

    Traffic Flow Elements

    • Introduction :

      This chapter introduces traffic flow theory, which involves the fundamental principles of traffic flow, including the development of mathematical relationships among the primary elements of a traffic stream: flow, density, and speed. Brief descriptions of such relationships and their applications are also included.

       

      Objectives:

      1. Identify the relationships among the primary elements of a traffic stream: flow, density, and speed.
      2. Explain the relevance of the knowledge of traffic flow theory to the traffic engineer in planning, designing, and evaluating the effectiveness of implementing traffic engineering measures on a highway system.
      3. Explain the relevance the major characteristics for key elements of a traffic stream including flow, density, speed, spacing and headway.
      4. Illustrate how to apply traffic flow theory in the analysis of traffic and demonstrate how to establish the basic relationships among the primary elements of a traffic stream.

    Chapter Four:

    Intersections Design

    •  Introduction:

      This chapter introduces intersection design, which involves the classification of intersections into general categories, especially for at-grade intersections and identification of design requirements for them. In addition, and the geometric design principles of at-grade intersections are also illustrated.

       Objectives:

      1. Identify the different types of at-grade intersections.
      2. Define the use and characteristics of each type of at-grade intersections.
      3. Explain the design requirements for the different types of intersections.
      4. Illustrate the principles of geometric design of at-grade intersections.
      5. Apply the principles of geometric design of at-grade intersections.
      6. Identify the relation between sight distance requirements and geometric design of intersections.

      Chapter Subjects:

      In this chapter we will cover the following subjects:

      1. Types and Design of At-Grade Intersections
      2. Geometric Design Principles of At-Grade Intersections

       

      Plan:

      First: To understand the various types and the design requirements of at-grade intersections, and to be able to identify the use and characteristics of each, study the following multimedia and slides files. 

    • Second: To understand the principles of the geometric design of at-grade intersections, including those related to:
      * Alignment of intersections,
      * Profiles of intersections,
      * Curves at intersections,
      * Channelization of intersections,
      * Minimum pavement widths of turning roadways, and
      * Sight distance at intersections,
      and to be able to apply these principles in the design of intersections, study the following multimedia and slides files.
    • Third: To have hands-on training to design the intersections and solve problems related to that, see the following examples, and check the solution.

    Chapter Five:

    Intersection Control

    • Introduction :

      This chapter introduces intersection control, which involves the selection of the proper type of traffic-control system. These systems are used to reduce traffic delays and crashes on at-grade intersections and to increase the capacity of highways and streets. However, appropriate regulations must be enforced if these systems are to be effective. This chapter describes the different methods of controlling traffic on at-grade intersections, and illustrates the warrants to select the proper control strategy. In addition, special emphasis will be give to the design of traffic signal systems.

       

      Objectives:

      1. Demonstrate the purposes, objectives and major characteristics of traffic control systems.
      2. Identify the different types of traffic control devices.
      3. Illustrate the types of conflicts among traffic streams at intersections.
      4. Explain the types of intersection control and illustrate the warrants for adopting each.
      5. Illustrate the principles of the design of traffic signal systems.
      6. Apply the principles of the design of traffic signal systems to isolated at-grade intersections.

      1. Concepts of Traffic Control
