This course provides an introduction to materials science and engineering, focusing on the relationship between the structure, properties, processing, and performance of engineering materials. Topics include the classification of materials and their crystal structures, imperfections in solids, and methods of microscopic examination. The course examines mechanical properties of materials, dislocations, and strengthening mechanisms, as well as the modes of failure of solids. Phase diagrams are introduced to explain phase transformations and material behavior. The course also covers ferrous and non-ferrous alloys and the principles of heat treatment processes used to modify material properties for engineering applications.
