Enrolment options

This course is designed to examine the characteristics, theories, diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders unique to children. Students will use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders to explore the major categories of mental illness for children including that of Intellectual Deficits and learn the criterion for diagnosis for each. The class will consider biological, developmental, cognitive, social and emotional theories of the etiology of mental illness as well as address syndromes that only affect children or that must begin in childhood to be diagnosed. The DSMV and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) will be used to introduce the theory and practice of diagnosis for children in psychology. The course will cover basic treatment options and best practice for each diagnostic category of mental illness as well as ethical issues specific to diagnosis and treatment of mental illness in children.
