Course Description:
The theory course provides opportunities for the students to acquire adequate knowledge base in the area of reproductive health, and gynecologic and neonatal nursing utilizing knowledge from the biophysical sciences, humanities, growth and development, problem solving and the nursing process: to promote, and maintain, health of individual’s families and groups with needs related to reproductive health, and safe motherhood. Common gynecological and neonatal problems are also introduced with an expanded knowledge related to women’s health issues. The course includes the study of obstetrics and the nursing care of women during various phases of child-bearing.
Intended Learning Outcomes and Competences:
A- Knowledge and Understanding
a1. Identify the structures and functions of the female reproductive system.
a2. Identify the reasons why women enter the health care delivery system, including preconception care.
a3. Clarify the components of taking a woman’s history and performing a physical examination.
a4. Describe expanded roles for nurses in genetics and genetic counseling.
a5. Explain the following,
- The process of fertilization.
- The development, structure, and functions of the placenta.
- The composition and functions of the amniotic fluid.
- The three organs or tissues arising from each of the three primary germ layers.
a6. Clarify gravidity and parity by using the five – and two – digit systems.
a7. Explain the;
- Various types of pregnancy tests
- Expected maternal anatomic and physiologic adaptations to pregnancy for each body system.
- Presumptive, probable, and positive signs of pregnancy.
a8. Explain recommended maternal weight gain during pregnancy.
a9. Explain five factors that affect the labor process.
a10. Clarify the nursing role in the management of the discomfort of a woman in labor.
a11. Explain the baseline FHR and evaluate periodic changes.
a12. Describe the anatomic and physiologic changes that occur during the postpartum period.
a13. Explain the purpose and components of the Apgar score.
a14. Differentiate between;
- The types of diabetes mellitus and their respective risk factors in pregnancy.
a15. Differentiate;
- The defining characteristic of gestational hypertension, preeclampsia and eclampsia, and chronic hypertension.
- Among the causes, signs and symptoms, possible complications, and management of early pregnancy bleeding and late pregnancy bleeding.
a16. Differentiate between preterm labor, PROM, post term.
a17. Discuss obstetric emergencies and their appropriate management.
a18. Identify the causes, signs and symptoms, and medical and nursing management of postpartum hemorrhage, Postpartum infections, Postpartum Psychologic.

a21. Discuss the osteoporosis, signs and symptoms and treatment

b6. Compare FHR monitoring performed by intermittent auscultation with external and internal monitoring through giving examples for both of them.

Nutrition is one of the many factors that influence the outcome of pregnancy. However, maternal nutritional status is an especially significant factor, both because it is potentially alterable and because good nutrition before and during pregnancy is an important preventive measure for a variety of problems.

Introduction:
Pregnant women commonly worry about the pain they will experience during labor and birth and how they will react to and deal with that pain. A variety of childbirth preparation methods can help the woman or couple cope with the discomfort of labor. The interventions selected depend on the situation and the preference of both the woman, her significant other, and her health care provider. The discomforts experienced during labor are discussed in this chapter, as are the nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic interventions to relieve the discomforts possible during the different stages of labor.

Introduction:
A woman with a postpartal complication is at risk from three points of view: her own health, her future childbearing potential, and her ability to bond with her new infant.Fortunately, most postpartal complications are preventable, and if they do occur, the majority can be treated effectively without long-term complications.
Objectives:
At the end of the chapter, the learners will be able to:
1. Describe common deviations from the normal that can occur during the puerperium.
2. Assess a woman for deviations from the normal during the puerperium.
3. Implement nursing care when a postpartal complication such as hemorrhage, infection, postpartal psychosis develops.
